A Russian frigate fired warning shots near a British yacht in the Channel, close to British waters, on Tuesday morning. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed this on Tuesday, Reuters news agency reports, after reporting on the incident by various British media. No one was injured.
The frigate, Admiral Grigorovich, wanted the yacht to change course. Several attempts to establish radio contact had failed, according to the Russian ministry.
The British Ministry of Defense says it is investigating reports of an incident in the Channel. The yacht reported it was sailing about 500 meters from the Russian frigate when the shots were fired and about 30 kilometers from Britain’s Isle of Wight, the ministry said.
The Russian ship was being watched at the time by a patrol ship of the British Royal Navy, reports said British media. This happens more often with Russian warships sailing through the Channel.
Last Sunday, the United Kingdom boarded a sanctioned oil tanker in the Channel, which is part of Russia’s shadow fleet. Authorities see no connection between the two events.
