Femke Broeders-Bol finished second in her outdoor debut in the 800 meters in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in a time of 1.57.13. The race was won by the Swiss Audrey Werro in a lightning fast 1.54.45. With her time, Bol is more than one and a half seconds slower than the Dutch record that Ellen van Langen set during her golden Olympic race in Barcelona in 1992.
Bol ran in third place in the first lap, following Werro. At the back of Werro, she moved up to 2nd place. She managed to stay in the wake of the Swiss for a long time, but had to let her go in the last corner. “It was so cool,” Bol said in a flash interview after the match. She was happy to run against Werro, who is in excellent form. “It was tough, but I enjoyed it.”
Broeders-Bol switched from the 400 meter hurdles to the 800 meters at the end of 2025. She made her debut in her new event in February during the indoor season. She immediately set the Dutch indoor record in Metz with 1.59.07. Then she was hampered by a tendon injury.
The two-time world champion in the 400 meter hurdles has stiff competition at her new distance. On June 7 in Stockholm, Werro ran the third fastest time ever. With her 1.53.98 she was the fastest woman in the 800 meters in 43 years. British Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson broke the 23-year-old world record in the 800 meters indoors in February.
Nadine Visser
Nadine Visser won the 100 meter hurdles in Ostrava. After a mediocre start, she raced to 12.65 seconds, just ahead of Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska. “I wasn’t ready for it yet,” she said shortly after the competition about her difficult start against her competitors. Visser already ran 12.47 this season.
A second Dutch victory in the 1000 meters seemed likely for a long time. Samuel Chapple attacked the race and led for a long time. In the last corner he was overtaken by the Australian Peter Bol, who won in 2.15.13. Chapple finished second in 2.15.20.
Taymir Burnet ran to third place in the 100 meters in 10.13 seconds in a fast race. South African Bayanda Walaza won in a personal best of 9.94.
Jonas Phijffers finished fourth in the 400 meters in 45.07 seconds. The victory went to Attila Molnár from Hungary.
