Russia and Belarus out of international hockey

The IIHF reached a settlement on Russia and Belarus.

At its meeting, the International Hockey Association IIHF has closed the Russian and Belarusian IIHF for the time being. There were also tougher sanctions on the table. The IIHF intends to introduce them if necessary.

The reason for the closure is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Belarus’s support for Russia.

Decision After that, Russia and Belarus will not be able to play at the World Championships in Finland in May. The Finnish Hockey Association has previously announced that the countries will not be able to participate in the Finnish World Championships.

The competition will be played in Finland from 13 to 29. May.

Earlier on Monday, the Finnish, Swedish and Czech hockey federations decided to exclude Russia from the Euro Hockey Tour. A new team will be chosen to replace Russia.

There is an unplayed Czech and Swedish tournament on the ECSC. The Czech Republic will play from April 24 to January 1. May and in Sweden from 5 May to 8 May

Russia will also not be allowed to hold the World Championships for under-20s at the turn of the year. The 2023 Men’s World Cup will be decided later.

In addition, Russia and Belarus are out of the World Championships for boys under 18 and Russia for the World Championships for girls under 18, the World Championships for under-20s and the World Championships for women.

According to the decision, the Russian and Belarusian Club teams will not be able to play international matches.
