Rumor: Brazil fires national coach

According to consistent media reports, the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) parted ways with national coach Fernando Diniz with immediate effect on Friday.

Accordingly, the decision was made by association president Ednaldo Rodrigues, who had only been reinstated in office the day before through an interim injunction by the Federal Court.

The 49-year-old only took over the coaching job at the beginning of July and has since overseen six international matches. After three recent defeats, the Selecao even has to worry about taking part in the World Cup. In qualifying, Brazil is only in sixth place with seven points after six games.

Since successful coach Tite was fired after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the association has been looking for a long-term solution. Neither Tite’s successor Ramon Menezes nor Diniz turned out to be this. Most recently, Real coach Carlo Ancelotti was considered the new national coach, but the Italian recently extended his contract with the Royals.

In November, Diniz won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense, where he has been head coach since April 2022. At the end of December he and his team lost to Pep Guardiola and Manchester City in the Club World Cup final.
