Ruhnert on Eberl-Step: Make the same decision one day

Oliver Ruhnert can understand Max Eberl’s resignation for health reasons very well. However, the manager of 1. FC Union Berlin sees no structural problem at the clubs.

The 50-year-old, who has been responsible for sport at the Irons since the summer of 2018, believes that the club managers are the ones who would design the job accordingly.

“I can’t identify with just playing a role and just working here. But I also live my job,” Ruhnert said in a media round on Tuesday: “And if you live your job, then I think that’s another difference.”

It affects him when Union wins or loses and the people in Köpenick are happy or not happy. “I know that there are sometimes one or the other colleague who also does his job, but he just does his job. Sometimes I would like to separate it like that, ”emphasized Ruhnert. “I think it’s very similar with Max.”

“It’s an emotional thing that drains you”

His statement that he was giving up his life a bit after 13 years as sports director at Borussia Mönchengladbach, he could understand very well. “It’s an emotional thing that drains you,” Ruhnert, who, among other things, celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time with the Unionern and currently sees fourth place light up when looking at the table.

He also emphasized how “super comfortable” he feels at Union, how great his employees and the team are. “And yet I can absolutely understand Max Eberl’s decision and I keep saying: It’s also clear to me that I will make the same decision one day.”
