At first glance, it looks inconspicuous. The Mont Ventoux. The forest that leads to the top almost idyllic. But Germany’s best driver in the field also knows what to expect here.
I mean, it’s a beautiful mountain, yes, also a super famous mountain on the tour. And I think you can look forward to driving up as a normal cyclist.
One of these normal cyclists is our reporter Dennis Pachulski. Admittedly, he has already conquered a few mountains, but the Mont Ventoux?
From here there is no back. I start and off we go.
On a distance of 15.7 kilometers, 1400 meters of altitude are waiting for Dennis. But the mountain pulls in after three kilometers.
I think I have to change the strategy. I don’t think it is as soon as possible.
But Dennis bites through. By the way, the Spaniard Iban Mayo holds the record on this stage. In 2004 he defeated Mont Ventoux in 55 minutes. In his experiment, Dennis takes an hour and 40 minutes to finally arrive at the top. Used almost twice as long as the professionals. But also twice as proud and at least as exhausted.
Even if I didn’t quite pack the record, as was to be expected, but reached the daily goal. Mont Ventoux packed. That is what counts. And now I’m honestly only looking forward to the departure.
As a hobby driver, Dennis just made it that way. But the Mont Ventoux is also a real board for Florian Lipowicz and the professionals.
