BEIRUT (dpa-AFX) – According to the UN, the Israeli military has built concrete walls in southern Lebanon near the border with Israel. A survey in October had already shown that a concrete wall built by the Israeli military had crossed the Blue Line – the Lebanese-Israeli border – southwest of the Lebanese town of Jarun, said the UN observation mission Unifil in Lebanon. Israel’s army rejected this.

When asked, she said that the wall, whose construction began in 2022, did not cross the Blue Line

More than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese territory was made inaccessible to the Lebanese population as a result of the construction of the concrete wall, Unifil said. The Israeli army was asked to move the so-called T-wall.

T-walls are solid, free-standing concrete barriers. They are often used by the military, among other things as a visual barrier or to control the movements of people or vehicles.

Further construction activity observed

In November, the blue helmets observed further “construction activities on T-walls in the area”. Here too, a survey would have shown that a section of the wall had exceeded the Blue Line. The Israeli military was also informed about this. Israel’s army said it was strengthening the barrier along the border with Lebanon.

There has been a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon for almost a year. However, both sides accuse each other of violations. The Israeli military accuses Hezbollah of reorganizing itself in the south of the country. The air force continues to attack Lebanon almost every day. According to the UN, more than 100 civilians have been killed in Lebanon since the ceasefire came into force./arj/DP/men
