Istanbul (dpa -AFX) – Another mayor of the largest opposition party Chp was arrested in Turkey. The police took the mayor of the Istanbul district of Sile, Özgür Kabadayi, and five other suspects in custody, reported the Anadolu state news agency. Among other things, you will be accused of bribery, founding a criminal association, extortion and manipulation of tenders. The Deputy Mayor and employee of the community were also among those arrested, the CHP announced on request.

The arrests are lined up in a series of similar measures against CHP politicians. The largest opposition party in Türkiye has been under increasing pressure for months. In March, the arrest and removal of the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, triggered nationwide protests. At least 15 mayors of the party sit in custody.

Also on Thursday, the mayor of the southeastern city of Adiyaman, Abdurrahman Tutdere, was discontinued by the Ministry of the Interior. He was temporarily arrested at the weekend in connection with corruption investigations and is now under house arrest.

The CHP, which had a surprise success in the nationwide local elections last year, sees the procedure against the party as politically motivated ./jam/dp/men
