ROUNDUP 2/Report: Dead after rocket strike in northern Israel – Seven injured

(new: more details and background)

TEL AVIV (dpa-AFX) – According to Israeli media reports, a woman was killed on Wednesday when a rocket hit the city of Safed in northern Israel. The media also reported that the attack came from neighboring Lebanon, citing the head of the Magen David Adom rescue service, Eli Bin. The rescue service had previously reported seven injuries as a result of the rocket impact. The injured were conscious and taken to a hospital.

Israeli media also reported power outages in the Galilee town with around 40,000 inhabitants. The Israeli military reported several rocket alarms in the north of the country on Wednesday morning. Israel’s army also said it had registered numerous rocket launches from Lebanon. The launch sites were then attacked. It was initially unclear who carried out the rocket attacks.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war after the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7th, there have been repeated confrontations between Israel’s army and militant groups such as Hezbollah in the Israeli-Lebanese border region. The Iranian-backed Shiite militia has since reported almost 200 fighters killed in its own ranks. Civilians were also killed on both sides. Tens of thousands of residents also left their hometowns in both countries. It is the worst escalation since the second Lebanon war in 2006./cir/DP/jha
