(toskanews) — The work of Mark Rothkoone of the most important painters of the second half of the twentieth century, is a form of experience of spacea path that necessarily becomes philosophical. Strozzi Palace dedicates an important, profound retrospective to him, which provides a credible interpretation of the scope of the work of the artist born in Russia in 1903 and who became one of the great interpreters of abstraction. The exhibition is entitled Rothko in Florence and is curated by Elena Geuna together with Christopher Rothkoson of Mark.

«We tried to identify the paintings that were most linked to his experience in Italy — said Rothko ad askanews —. He had looked at the art of the Renaissance, at the traces of ancient Rome all his life, waiting to get to know them directly.”

Walking through the rooms of Palazzo Strozzi you feel that the power of Rothko’s painting goes beyond narrative assumptions: Rothko’s paintings are windows open on us. «He thought of the paintings as something that really was present in the room – Christopher Rothko said again – a sentimental experience. It is important that these paintings ask the big questions: why are we here, where are we going…».

On display are a series of masterpieces that come from the most important museums in the world, from MoMA in New York al Guggenheim Bilbaobut also sketches and works on paper. These «credible places» they also take shape at Palazzo Strozzi, representing an encounter with something “other” through large philosophical fields of color.
