The Rostock Seawolves’ downward slide in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) continues unabated. The Mecklenburgers lost to German champions FC Bayern Munich on Monday evening 64:86 (27:44) and suffered their fifth defeat in a row.
Coach Przemyslaw Frasunkiewicz’s team was denied the hoped-for surprise against the league leaders on Monday evening in Westpark, as was the case in the first round duel (67:85) on the Baltic Sea. But after a strong third quarter (28:17), the outsider was able to dream of their first ever league win against FCB, at least until the final period.
“We ran out of breath at the end. And Bayern punished that very quickly,” summarized Rostock captain Sid-Marlon Theis on “Dyn”.
Play-in places are still in sight for Rostock
Despite their 17th loss of the season, the Seawolves are still in the race for the play-in spots. They are only two points behind tenth place, which the Niners Chemnitz occupy, three game days before the end of the main round. “We will continue to fight. And in the end we will see where we are,” announced Theis.
Meanwhile, Bayern maintained their six-point lead at the top over Alba Berlin after the 31st BBL round.
Seawolves without the right bite
The defending champion calmly played down his workload against the Seawolves, who were overwhelmed in many phases. Because the North Germans were often a little too hesitant, the FCB achieved many relatively easy points. On the other hand, the Rostock team often shot from sub-optimal positions and thus failed to make the basket.
The home team quickly led 31:16 (13th) and extended this lead to 18 points. Nine Munich players contributed to the clear 44:27 half-time lead, which was once again an expression of the depth in the champions’ squad.
Rostock improves against unfocused Bayern
Aware of their individual superiority and with the comfortable lead behind them, Bayern took things more slowly after half-time. Too leisurely for coach Svetislav Pesic, who clearly expressed his dissatisfaction to his players during a timeout in the middle of the third quarter. At this point, Munich’s lead had dwindled to nine points (52:43).
Shortly after Pesic’s lecture, the guests were even able to reduce the score to six points through TJ Crockett Jr. (48:54). Suddenly a surprise was once again within the realm of possibility for the Rostock team, who had almost no chance in the first 20 minutes.
Seawolves had no chance in the last quarter
But the race to catch up took a lot of energy. In the last ten minutes, the Mecklenburgers didn’t have much to do, while FCB was able to increase the number of hits again and win the fourth quarter with 25:9.
The most successful shooter for Rostock was Lukasz Kolenda with 17 points. Andreas Obst and Justinian Jessup scored most often for the champions (15 points each).
