Rooney shock: “Alcohol was my liberation, I drank until I passed out”

The former Everton and Manchester United striker, guest on former rugby champion Rob Burrow’s podcast, revealed that he found alcohol as a refuge from excessive pressure from a very young age

Guest on Rob Burrow’s podcast, a former rugby champion suffering from a motor neuron disease, former Manchester United and Everton player Wayne Rooney returned to talk about his problems with alcohol and the difficulties he encountered due to too much fame.

Rooney admits: “I stayed at home for two days without going out, I drank until I passed out”

Wayne Rooney, current manager of Birmingham City, during the interview on Burrow’s podcast, retraced some difficult moments experienced at the beginning of his career when, still very young, he had to deal with excessive pressure: “I was in my early 20s, I came home and stayed there for two days without going out. I drank until I almost passed out. Alcohol was my release. I didn’t want to be around people, because sometimes I felt embarrassed. Sometimes I felt like I had let people down and ultimately I didn’t know how else to deal with this situation. When you don’t accept the help and guidance of others, you can really fall to the bottom and it happened to me for many years. Thankfully, I’m now not afraid to talk about these issues“.
