Ron Boszhard was late at his father’s deathbed due to TV recordings and Carlo Boszhard’s brother has some difficulty with that. “I didn’t expect him to die.”
TV stars Carlo and Ron Boszhard have been very concerned about their 82-year-old mother Wil since she lost her husband. Nothing has been the same in their family since last summer, Ron says in a candid interview with the Weekend. The death did not come out of nowhere, because he had been quite ill for two years, but in the end it happened quickly.
‘He was already dead’
Ron was unable to attend the last minute due to TV recordings. “My mother called me when I was in the car after TV recordings: my father wanted to go to bed and she needed my help. So I said: ‘I’m coming, but I’m on the way, so otherwise call my girlfriend for help in the meantime.’”
He continues: “Together they took him to his room and then he was dead. Emilie was terribly shocked and called 911. So I was actually too late.”
Not expected
It is difficult that he missed this moment due to TV recordings, says Ron. “Yes, of course. But I didn’t expect him to die. The night before I took him to his room, because he could no longer stand or walk properly. We then took him upstairs together in the elevator.”
This time he was not there. “He sat down on the bed, looked at my mother and then fell away. Emilie said: ‘I think he’s dead.’ But my mother didn’t think so, because he was still sighing. That turned out to be his last breath.”
64 years together
Wil, known from Carlo’s earlier programs, has not yet recovered. “It is a huge loss for my mother, more than I thought. I actually thought: she took care of me for two years, so she is happy that it is over. But no. They were of course inseparable for 64 years and if someone is suddenly no longer there…”
“She wakes up at night and still feels where he is, or she thinks he is calling her. They always both sat in their own corner of the couch watching television and sometimes she still talks to him.”
In the garden
How does his more famous brother Carlo deal with the loss? “Carlo didn’t want the ashes. So I took it, I’m also the eldest. I asked Carlo if he wanted some, but then it was like: you have the hips, I have the top. And he didn’t want that. The ashes are in my bookcase.”
They will scatter the ashes in Carlo’s garden on his birthday. “My father always thought Carlo’s house was very beautiful, a place where he wanted to be scattered. I had a necklace made with some ashes and we will scatter the rest into the wide world. That will be an emotional moment for us.”
