According to curator Wouter Dhaeze, it is a very rare object. “Of this type of jewel, only twenty known throughout the Roman Empire, especially in England. In Flanders, only two have been found. It must have cost a fortune at that time and was probably in possession of someone with a lot of connections.”

The chain dates from the 3rd or 4th century AD. The grave itself, in which no more skeleton was found, dates from the 5th or early 6th century. The find again illustrates the important role that Oudenburg played in the late Roman coastal defense.
