Former Bundesliga coach Roger Schmidt received a high severance payment after his dismissal from Portugal’s record champions Benfica Lisbon.

As the Portuguese record champions announced on Thursday, they had agreed on 8.7 million euros with the 57-year-old. Schmidt was fired in August after a weak start to the season and his contract ran until 2026.

In the 2022/2023 season, the former Bayer Leverkusen coach was responsible for an outstanding season: Benfica became champions for the 38th time and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

In the second year, however, they only finished second behind local rivals Sporting. This summer, Schmidt was a candidate for the coaching position at FC Bayern, and most recently he was also linked to RB Leipzig.
