It was the oldest German record on an Olympic running distance. But after 45 years, medium -distance runners Robert Farken broke him.

Robert Farken ensured a historical result at the Diamond League meeting in Rome. The medium -sized stretcher from Leipzig remained almost a second below the previous German record at his season over 1500 meters in 3: 30.80 minutes – a record that had existed since 1980.

So the 26-year-old undercut the time of Thomas Wessinghage (3: 31.58) of August 27, 1980. It was the oldest still existing German men’s record on an Olympic running distance. His own personal best also improved farkers by 1.3 seconds.

As fourth, he missed the podium in the Stadio Olimpico only very thin – he was only missing six hundredths of a second. The 1500-meter specialist had already met the standard for the World Cup in Tokyo (13th to 21st September) last year. The victory in Rome went to Azzedine Habz from France, who finished 3: 29.72 minutes.

Without a podium, however, the evening ended for the German discus launchers. Marike Steinacker from Leverkusen became fifth with her season best of 64.78 meters. Kristin Pudenz from Potsdam, Olympic second of Tokyo, finished seventh with 64.12 meters.

Olympic champion Valarie Allman from the USA secured the victory. With 69.21 meters, she set up a new meeting record.
