Robert Eenhoorn will step down as general manager at AZ on July 1. As successor to Toon Gerbrands, he joined the football club from Alkmaar in October 2014. “I noticed that a certain metal fatigue sets in and then you have to draw conclusions,” Eenhoorn explains his decision.
“A club like AZ deserves full commitment and I noticed that that energy was becoming increasingly difficult to find for myself. I based the decision that has now been made on that. There is no insight yet into what I will do next and to avoid all speculation So there is no next step in sight yet,” says Eenhoorn.
Although AZ is currently performing less well, under Eenhoorn the football club performed well both financially and sportingly. For example, AZ has been at the top of the Premier League for years and has also done well in the European context. Last year, AZ reached the semi-finals of the Conference League, where it was eliminated by the English West Ham United.
“Robert has led AZ for ten years with vision and structure. But above all, with enormous dedication, passion and great involvement, he has contributed to everything where AZ is now. When Robert told us that he no longer felt the energy needed in this position, this obviously dominated. first disappointment, but soon also understanding for his choice,” said René Nelissen, chairman of the Supervisory Board.
Eenhoorn has worked closely with director of football affairs Max Huiberts in recent years. Director of Football Affairs Max Huiberts about the decision: “Robert’s decision is difficult for me, but at the same time I cherish the long period we worked together and the many wonderful moments we experienced. I owe Robert a lot of gratitude. He was much more than a colleague and has contributed to my development as director of football affairs,” said Huiberts.
It is not yet known who will succeed Eenhoorn.
