Rob Stenders almost signed for a return to BnnVara in 2023, but decided at the last minute to stay with the commercial Radio Veronica. “I was very unfaithful to them.”

Radio DJ Rob Stenders left BnnVara in 2021 for Radio Veronica, where he also became station manager. The latter function came to an end in 2023, when Talpa sold the station to Mediahuis. There were rumors at the time about an NPO comeback. “We have also heard the rumors, Rob is always welcome at BnnVara,” a spokesperson for the broadcaster said at the time.

Clutter work

Rob did not like the position of channel boss at all, he says The Telegraph. “That was a difficult period. I was not a classic leader. I come from the time of Lex Harding, who said: what terrible shoddy work you deliver.”

He continues: “Well, that’s no longer possible these days. I think I just made it through with a kind of charm. I would never have said ‘yes’ to that position again.”

Almost back

When Radio Veronica moved from Talpa to Mediahuis, Rob almost opted to return to the NPO. “The radio DJ chose his money’s worth and virtually signed with BnnVara, the broadcaster for which he previously made radio on NPO Radio 2 and 3FM,” the newspaper said.

Rob backed down when he heard about Mediahuis’ plans. He says: “During my time as channel boss of Veronica, I was already working on bringing in Gerard Ekdom. And I was in discussions with Wouter van der Goes & Frank van ‘t Hof and Coen & Sander. The latter duo later opted for a morning show on JOE, but we were close to a deal.”

Infidelity

Things worked out with the others, according to Rob. “When it became clear that Geer, Wout and Frank would transfer, I thought: I would be crazy if I didn’t stay now. Making radio with my group of friends feels like a privilege. Although at the time I thought I was very disloyal to BnnVara.”

“I thought I would retire after this tour on the radio, it has been nice so far. I don’t know exactly when. For the time being I am still having a great time with Caroline and De Bonanza.”
