Nick Reiner caused a stir when he attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday (December 13), just a day before he allegedly murdered his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer. Sources confirmed this to ROLLING STONE.
Accordingly, the Reiners asked beforehand whether they could bring Nick to the party so that they could, as it is literally said, “keep an eye on him.” At the party, the sources continued, Nick exhibited “antisocial behavior,” such as staring at people.
Reports of arguments and family stress
TMZ was first to report that Nick attended the party, with witnesses telling them that Nick and Reiner got into a “very loud argument.” The outlet further reported that Reiner and Singer have struggled in recent months with how to deal with Nick as he continues to struggle with mental health issues and alleged substance abuse.
A representative for the Reiner family did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A representative for O’Brien also did not respond.
Finding the bodies and arresting them
Reiner and Singer were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon (December 14). Nick, 32, was arrested at 9:15 a.m. local time after Los Angeles police investigators “determined that the Reiners were victims of a homicide” and that Nick was “responsible for their deaths.”
Nick was arrested on suspicion of murder and “remains held without bail” while police present their case to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.
A long history of addiction and conflict
Nick had a complicated relationship with his parents and struggled with drug addiction for a long time. He entered rehab for the first time when he was 15 and spent much of his teenage years going through different facilities.
A few years after getting clean at 19, he co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which focuses on the relationship between a troubled son and a famous father and was directed by Reiner.
One of Nick’s last known public appearances was at the premiere of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues in Los Angeles in September. Nick was photographed on the red carpet with his parents and siblings.
