Rider shocked by wolf chase in Diever: ‘Not a threatening situation’

A rider who rode in the Drents-Friese Wold near Diever this afternoon was followed by a wolf for eight minutes. She screamed to scare the animal off, but the wolf continued to follow her and her horse at a distance of about 25 meters. After about two kilometers, the wolf stopped on the dirt track when the rider came to the bike path. According to the Mammal Association, there was no question of a threatening situation.

“I’m still in shock,” says the rider, who wishes to remain anonymous. Before she saw the wolf, she already noticed that her horse behaved differently: he threw his head back. “Later I saw something move behind me out of the corner of my eye in the same place where I met a stray dog last week. But it had a collar on and this animal was twice its size. I got goosebumps and my heart sank” says the rider.

She started screaming and the wolf stopped for a moment. “But then he started walking towards me again. The moment he went into the woods for a moment I thought: I’ve lost him. Now is the time to get away. Then I accelerated. After a while I found out that the wolf was after me again.”
