Non the last few days, one word has suddenly returned to the center of attention: ricin. It was brought back into the spotlight by a news story that deeply affected Italian public opinion. TO Campobasso, mother and daughter died after Christmas lunch. At first it was thought of food poisoning or a medical error. But the toxicological tests have completely changed the picture: traces of ricin, a highly toxic substance. Hence the opening of an investigation into a double premeditated murder. A turning point that has sparked not only investigative but also health questions: what is ricin? How dangerous is it really? And why is it considered one of the most feared toxins?

Understanding how it works and what the risks are does not serve to create alarmism, but to develop awareness. And today more than ever, knowledge is a powerful prevention tool.

What is ricin

There ricin is a natural toxic protein present in the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis). Despite its plant origin, it is one of the most dangerous substances known. It is important to distinguish: from castor oil, used in medicine and cosmetics, ricin is completely removed. The risk concerns exclusively the untreated seed or the isolated toxin.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)ricin is classified among the substances at high risk for public healthprecisely because of its high toxicity and relative ease of extraction.

How it affects the body

The danger of ricin lies in its extremely effective mechanism of action.

It blocks the vital functions of cells

Ricin works by preventing cells from producing proteins, a process essential for survival. When this mechanism breaks down, cells quickly begin to die.

This effect has been extensively studied: research published in Journal of Biological Chemistry demonstrated how the ricin inactivates ribosomes, fundamental structures for protein synthesis.

The organs most affected

Depending on the route of exposure, ricin can damage the gastrointestinal system, liver and kidneys, respiratory system and/or circulatory system. The result, in the most serious cases, is a progressive collapse of the organs.

What are the symptoms of ricin poisoning

The symptoms are not immediately recognisable, and this is precisely what makes it so insidious. After ingestion, initial symptoms may include:

  • nausea
  • vomit
  • intense diarrhea
  • abdominal pain
  • general weakness.

When the situation gets worse

As the hours or days pass, the following may appear:

  • severe dehydration
  • respiratory difficulties
  • liver and kidney damage
  • multiple organ failure.

In the most serious cases, death can occur relatively quickly.

How dangerous is ricin

Ricin is often cited among the most toxic substances known, and for good reason.

Minimal quantities are enough

A very small dose may be enough to cause serious or fatal effects. This makes it particularly dangerous even in non-obvious contexts.

Because it is so feared

It has no noticeable flavor. Additionally, it can be difficult to spot right away. Important to know, there is no specific antidote, and the initial symptoms can be confused with other pathologies.

Exposure modes

Ricin can enter the body in several ways.

Ingestion (most common)

Through contaminated food or drink.

Inhalation

It can cause serious lung damage and breathing difficulties.

Contact

Less dangerous, but still not to be underestimated.

Diagnosis and treatment

Recognizing ricin poisoning is not easy. Doctors rely on clinical symptoms, blood tests and specialized toxicology tests.

Is there a cure?

To date, there is no specific antidote. According to theWorld Health Organization (WHO)treatment is based on supportive care, such as intensive rehydration, respiratory support and advanced hospital therapies.

Ricin and public safety

In recent decades, ricin has also been the subject of attention in the safety field. Precisely because of its toxicity, it has been used in cases of poisoning and criminal attempts. The production and handling of ricin is strictly controlled internationally.

What to do to protect yourself

  • Do not ingest castor seeds
  • Avoid unknown substances
  • Pay attention to suspicious symptoms.
