Richard Groenendijk proves himself as an artist who is at home in all markets ★★★★☆

He seems such a social and spontaneous man, but Richard Groenendijk is not at all. In his new solo we find the comedian half depressed in bed. It is a large and luxurious bed, in a decor that is reminiscent of a palace. After he has made a damning comment on how the world stands, Groenendijk talks about the contradictions in his character. It is an alternation of ‘See me’ and ‘Leave me alone’.

More contradictions are incorporated in Better for everyone, a beautifully made show in which Groenendijk once again proves himself as an artist who is at home in all markets. There are hilarious conferences, striking characterizations and catchy songs. There is also social involvement when Groenendijk talks about the Rotterdam healthcare system or expresses his disgust at polarization in the Netherlands.

Life as a married man is the common thread in his stories. In 2019 Groenendijk married his friend Marko. There are funny accounts of the organization of the party and the messy wedding night, but Groenendijk also raises interesting issues about gay emancipation.

Here too there are contradictions. In one situation everything seems normal and okay, in the other Groenendijk encounters hostility again. As can be seen in the moving song I hope so, in which Groenendijk orders a wedding cake from the bakery on his native island of Goeree-Overflakkee. In yet another situation, Groenendijk sees incomprehension that there is none. That says something about his own character.

The double message that Groenendijk delivers is strong: gay emancipation is well underway in the Netherlands, but the final destination has not been reached. Richard Groenendijk knows how to make this clear in a very funny way.
