Defending champion Margarita Kolosov is beaten: Darja Varfolomeev is the new all-around champion in rhythmic gymnastics.

Darja Varfolomeev is the new all-around champion in rhythmic gymnastics. The 15-year-old also prevailed against defending champion Margarita Kolosov in the finals in Berlin on Friday (June 24, 2022).

Duel between Varfolomeev and Kolosov in the last round

Even before the start of the last round in Berlin’s Max-Schmeling-Halle it was clear: Darja Varfolomeev or defending champion Margarita Kolosov would decide between themselves gold and silver. Varfolomeev went into the final leg with a score of 99,500 and Kolosov with a 97,050. Other competitors led Helena Ripken in third with 82,950.

The leading Varfolomeev (15 years old) made a small mistake in the last exercise and was deducted 0.5 points. However, she otherwise showed a strong freestyle with a very high level of difficulty – and achieved another 31,650 points.

Kolosov, who grew up in Potsdam, also had a strong final performance and scored 31,100 points – but in the end it wasn’t enough to defend the title, Varfolomeev triumphed in first place.
