Review: Voodoo Jürgens :: How the night was still young

In the past, lips were still blood red, the grass was tall, summer lasted forever, love was fresh and the night was still young. The title of Voodoo Jürgens’ new album, WIE DIE NOCHT NOCH JUNG WOR, is a line from “Federdress”, the saddest and yet happiest, definitely most wonderful song about growing old and dying that you’ve heard out there for a long time heard. The Viennese singer-songwriter, who was born David Öllerer, tells the story of a love that, precisely because it is eternal, must come to an end at the end of life, accompanied by a hint of tango.

Yes, it’s about the really big feelings, which are also reflected in the sound, which ranges from a funfair to a jazz club, but knows very well how to spell soul. With his third album, Voodoo Jürgens does justice to his compatriot and namesake Udo J. when he raises the sound in songs like “Weida is gscheida”, makes the arrangements a good deal thicker, even discovers a little bit of glamour .

But then there is again a talking blues like “Lassalle Strossn”, in which stories from the housing shortage are told while a muted trumpet laments melancholy. Not much has changed since then, melancholy is still the all-dominant feeling, the losers and outcasts, those on the dark side, are the protagonists. Unemployment benefits are just enough for some, and the others don’t know why they’re still together at all. One complains, “please don’t leave me”, someone doesn’t know where to go. But don’t worry: everyone finds salvation, at the latest in death.
