“Joy, Joy!” You can use it really well these days: the blues, gospel, soul, country and what-noch-all-all-all musician June from Jackson, Tennessee, not only calls the first single of her new album like this, but also dedicates Owls, Omens, and Oracles (almost) to faith in good and beautiful.
For this purpose, the over-gifted guitarist and distinctive singer with her desired producer M. became deep into the fund of pop history, quotes nostalgic fifties-doo-wop sounds and overflowing rock’n’roll, mixes soul, folk and bluegrass, without ever losing her own path-she just believes and simply listens to the path. The simple and extensive ballad “Trust the Path”. In songs such as “Endless Tree”, “Love Me Any Ole Way” or “Sweet Things Just for You”, a happy duet with Norah Jones, June impressively impress it.
The music is so stirring that you want to snap a trumpet or another instrument and follow it, start a move through the city and call the people: “Get away with hatred! Leave love and sun into your hearts!” Sounds pathetic? Naive? A bit over it? June can also do it differently: the worn “Superpower”, a mixture of dark bar jazz and dub, can be heard as a direct criticism of prevailing conditions, in the reduced “I’m in Love” growls and greases Valerie at the deepest depths until the piano tones bring the light back.
