Review: Trettmann :: Insomnia

The fact that Trettmann is not your usual German rapper becomes clear at the very latest when the most famous snap song in the republic is heard. Herbert Grönemeyer sings, so of course Grönemeyer sings a refrain. Henning May had already been able to croak beforehand: “It’s raining a cold world outside.” The Chemnitz native, whose real name is Stefan Richter, doesn’t just position himself with the choice of star guests, not in rap, but rather as a singer/songwriter. As such, on his fifth album INSOMNIA, he mainly dives into lovesickness.

It’s almost as if relationships never begin, only end. The last bottle is drunk, the sun goes down, the view is empty and “everything is over”, while once again KitschKrieg have produced spartan but conceivably dark beats. Trettmann has announced that INSOMNIA will be the end of the extremely successful collaboration, and at the end of the album the balance is drawn: “All the tears make me so confident today”.

Already in the title of the song, “Stefan Richter” claims that it’s no longer rap-authentic, but genuinely authentic. In short associative sentences, he describes his career from the difficult post-reunification youth, to whom he commemorated in “Grauer Beton”, to “singer for parents, underdogs and gangsters”. INSOMNIA sounds just as willing to compromise.
