Smokeless piano indie pop – airy, but with a tendency towards pathos.
Maybe it’s because Finn Andrews doesn’t smoke anymore. Or that he left London and returned to his native New Zealand. In any case, the music of his band project The Veils has lost a lot of its existentialist power in recent years.
In 2025, ASPHODELS, a very introspective, yet not heavy piano record, was released. FRAGILE WORLD continues the story with slightly different coordinates: The songs are poppier and faster, but remain airy and are once again characterized by the piano. In his lyrics, Andrews sings about the vulnerability of the world, but also of his own existence as an artist and person in his mid-40s.
The piece “Lungs”, for example, reflects smoking as a vice, but is above all a song in search of a life and a love. The folk shuffle “New Day” is also strong, in which The Veils are reminiscent of the great pop-rock band Deacon Blue, which tends to drift into pathos.
