Surprisingly, lounge society hadn’t existed in the 1980s; nobody wanted to have invented the semiotically charged word combination that could have described so well a funk-jazz-pop project to the left of the Culture Club or a few guitars away from the Lounge Lizards. But it’s too late now anyway: With the debut album TIRED OF LIBERTY, the name Lounge Society is set, it stands for a playful, highly intensive handling of styles (and the associated attitudes) that are authenticated by pop history. For the emotional thunder that first post-adolescent songs can use so much. And above all for a swaying narrative of fearlessness where everything is in flux.

Four lads from the Nowherelands of Northern England, via Dan Carey’s acclaimed London label Speedy Wunderground (Squid, Black Country, New Road, Kae Tempest) and a debut EP in 2021, set out to play disgust and uninhibited embrace where the air screams is thin – in the spaces between post-punk, funk and electronics. At the album’s head end, the pre-release track “Generation Game” barks, a rock ‘n’ roll announcement with sharp teeth and a midsection where the music threatens to run away. Almost everything that makes TIRED OF LIBERTY a great debut is contained in these almost six minutes, missing the no-wave funkiness (“Beneath The Screen”) and a set of engaging, sometimes jubilant post-punk choral vocals (“Last breathing”). Long live the latest re-exploration of the 1980s!
