Heather Nova: “Other Shores” (Review & Stream)

The folk elf surprises with original covers In the distant past, this woman who grew up on a boat in Bermuda was considered a wondrous angel from another planet. Then she entered great halls, became a diva. And now, yawn, a cover album? With her sparse arrangements, Heather Nova stops any eye-rolling and takes the wind out of the critics’ sails with the first fragile bars of “Waiting For A Girl Like You”.

Has anyone ever acted that extreme? Whispered “Don’t Stop Believin'”? “Never Gonna Give You Up” becomes a completely different great song under Heather’s tutelage and with cello accompaniment. “Stayin’ Alive” experiences a similar metamorphosis. The wondrous angel – he’s back unexpectedly.
