Numerous rock bands play the focus on their central duo: Oasis are only on the Gallaghers in their comeback campaign. Cheap trick raised this prioritization to the art form at the end of the 70s: While singers and bass players gave the title heroes on the artwork, the two clowns of the troop were increasingly packed into the background.
The Darkness would not be the Darkness, they would not turn the skewer around: Instead of the dazzling Hawkins-Brothers, only bassist Frankie Pullain and drummer Rufus Taylor, son of Queen legend Roger, pose on the cover-with chunky retro cell phones. You already have the laughs on your (front and back) side! The opener puts on: “I am a rock and roll party cowboy and i ain’t gonna read no Tolstoy.” Yep, we are still at least up to the belt rose in an equally bombastic and self -ironic hard rock. The following “I hate myelf” is the most frenetic single of the band ever-including saxophone, cowboys, Brianmay and Chuck Berry memory guitars.
19 years after Justin Hawkins a female version of himself in the video for “Is it just me?” he has married, he presents himself again as a woman in the one-take clip to the punk pregnancy. “The Longest Kiss” is a review number in the best 70ies queen manner. After all the paths led to the final “Weekend in Rome”, only the symphonic sky ride remains. For Dreams on Toast (the title alone!), Heads can be worried and palms clap on thighs.
