Review: Slowthai :: UGLY

The word UGLY can be read as an acronym: U Gotta Love Yourself. The British musician Slowthai takes this pretty appropriation of the ugly to heart – and not only had the four letters inked under his eye, but also named his new album that. Like its predecessor TYRON (2021), UGLY is a deep examination of oneself and one’s environment. Calling Slowthai just a rapper is far too short-sighted, he hints at all the very British forms of pop, from indie rock and pop to punk and post-punk to grime.

One is also amazed at how well the text and music fit together organically: It’s been a long time since anyone has sung about self-doubt and suicidal thoughts in such a good mood and suitable for hits as in “Sooner”, as convincingly as in the opener “Yum” or in “Fuck It Puppet”. you rarely hear someone talk to themselves therapeutically, and singing about love as simply and truthfully as in “HAPPY” is anything but natural. Once again, the 29-year-old Londoner shows how versatile he is. This is also supported by the selection of his guests – among them are Fontaines DC, Ethan P. Flynn and Jacob Bugden from Beabadoobee.
