Review: Nouvelle Vague :: SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO

Even more 80s hits in French cliché versions.

The gag was good – but it couldn’t be better than the cocktail version of “Too Drunk To Fuck” from the project’s first album anyway. Although COULEURS SUR PARIS, the record with lounge adaptations of French new wave hits, was great because it introduced you to a lot of great originals. SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? is the fifth collection from Nouvelle Vague, the basic principle remains the same: pieces from the 80s played as if they were French recordings from the 60s to early 70s.

The look leads away from post-punk and towards pop: “You Spin Me Round” by Dead Or Alive and Duran Duran’s “Girls On Flm” are transported to the cabaret, “Shout” by Tears For Fears and the title track by The Clash are now reggae , “People Are People” kitschy French pop. The highlights are the courageous adaptations: “This Charming Man” as airy bossanova pop, Yazoo’s “Only You” with buttery Northern Soul elements, “She’s In Parties” by Bauhaus as a dark ballad.
