An album that features yodeling has probably never had as much swag as this one: On her debut KRRRA, the singer and actress Nenda, who comes from Ötztal in Austria and now lives in London, weaves together Tyrolean dialect with British English, the remoteness of her village of origin with London’s cosmopolitanism, the Viennese humor passed down by her grandmother with contemporary style.
Editorial recommendations
On the one hand, a reckoning with the narrow-mindedness of their village of origin, on the other hand, a hidden declaration of love for it, KRRRA is, above all, a firework of creativity co-ignited by the Nigerian jazz guitarist and producer Femi Temowo: no musical idea is shied away from here, conscious rap accompanied by drums meets melodic indie pop, big band meets electronically distorted singing.
And there’s still some yodeling too. As casual and self-confident as Nenda is, she also reveals a vulnerable side on the songs “R2F”, “Stellar” and “Alone”, which are about saying goodbye, which is articulated between sadness and anger. Here she switches between different tonalities with great musical sensitivity. Impressive!
