Review: Mui Zyu :: Rotten Bun For An Eggless Century

Sore bears, eggless centuries, ghosts with peach skin: In the wondrous world of Eva Liu, singer of the London indie band Dama Scout and solo as Mui Zyu, not only the song titles are wildly creative. She takes us into landscapes of twisted beauty, thumping rhythm machines toil through the misty valleys, while scurrying cloud-cuckoo-land electronics rain down on you. In the midst of the dusty pianos and distorted synth chords, however, beautiful, simple vocal hooks grow, although always a note off track. There has never been a sweeter song about rotten bread than in the album opener “Rotten Bun”, a bittersweet piece of electro-melancholy.

At times it’s like hearing the forgotten 80’s singer/songwriter Virginia Astley being squeezed upside down through the Boards of Canada filter. Hong Kong native Liu fuses pop and experimentation in a framework that is at once accessible and otherworldly, thanks to the simplicity of the melodies and the intricacies of the arrangements. Yes, this record is an off the beaten track marvel: Because in Eva Liu’s enchanted world of rotten bread and delayed chords you can still experience them, the true miracles.
