Review: Little Dragon :: SLUGS OF LOVE

Tied to the Noughties: Electro-Pop that beams you back to the turn of the millennium.

Digital nostalgia: When the breakbeats kick in after just under a minute on “Amöban”, the first track on the seventh album by Little Dragon from Gothenburg, the pop heart beams back to the early noughties, when trip-hop and drum’n’bass met, according to the motto: melancholy meets hyperactivity.

And so it goes: “Frisco” has a dragged-out house beat – let’s just see if the old Basement Jaxx records are still around somewhere. And since the ensuing title track could easily have been part of Metronomy’s 2008 album NIGHTS OUT, the verdict is obvious: SLUGS OF LOVE is a pure zero electro-pop revue.

Damon Albarn’s appearance on the song “Glow” also fits in with this, which initially comes along as a gently pulsating R’n’B ballad, only to then receive one of Albarn’s typical dreamy longing melodies. The album is held together by singer and songwriter Yukimi Nagano, whose vocals give the sometimes constructed tracks the necessary portion of soul.
