The Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke masters the demonstrative leaving of one’s own past behind like no other. Above all, he didn’t want to hear the Bloc Party debut SILENT ALARM when the successor came out. So it’s not surprising that he lit it straight away for a promo photo for his sixth solo album THE FLAMES PT 2. The cleansing effects of fire and such.

Exactly this fire in his music has gotten more and more lost over time, and the actually overflowing songwriting talent here too often disappears in bratty electro-pop stompers or the whining retro guitars. No, the word back burner is inappropriate, but lines like “I’m on fire” in the song “Vandal” he presented more convincingly in the band context 18 years ago. When Kele dares to step out of the comfort zone and experiment with different styles of house, it can work like on the hypnotic “No Risk No Reward”. Too often, however, the grooves sit between the chairs and do not want to decide.
