Let’s first take a dip in the sea with João Selva, as long as it’s as good for us musically as it is on ONDA, the new album by the native Brazilian. Not only the piece “Banho De Mar” refers to the location where the recording was made, the Île du Levant on the French Mediterranean. From the first bars of the opening track “Onda” (“Wave”), Selva goes on a summer sun trip peppered with disco, soul, funk and MPB ingredients.
In “Fantástica Bahia” the singer and guitarist pays homage to his great role models Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, “Amor Em Copacabana” is aimed straight at the dance floor, and then Selva also moves a little far away from its origins, towards rumba and the Caribbean -Beats. Maybe ONDA has so many good vibes because the artist visited the carnival in his native Brazil before the production. The fact that the record is being released in the German winter can be seen as a big surprise, who wouldn’t want to lighten the mood a little?
