Review: Jack White :: Entering Heaven Alive

In general, when an album release is announced as a two-part work, the former gets much more attention. In the case of ENTERING HEAVEN ALIVE, this could well prove to be a methodological error. Almost three months after FEAR OF THE DAWN, the wonderfully jittery quasi-concept album on the fear of dawn with eclectic electro sounds that evoked more the Beastie Boys with Beck as an honorary member, ENTERING HEAVEN ALIVE is dominated by analogue acoustic arrangements and traditional tones.

Right at the beginning, Jack White says hello to The Band on “A Tip From You To Me” and pays even more tribute to Plant as Page with “Love Is Selfish”. “Help Me Along” leafs through the Beatles textbook, while “Please God, Don’t Tell Anyone” certainly deserves the Dylan label and “If I Die Tomorrow” evokes Lee Hazlewood’s western verve. Last but not least, White, as a passionate music nerd and aesthetics apologist of complementary shapes and colors, which he happens to be, insists on reducing the opener thread of the previous record with the closing track “Taking Me Back (Gently)”. to resume Roots-arrested reprise with Fidel. A difference like day and night? Truly and truly applicable to both albums. Nevertheless, each one knows how to fascinate in its own way.
