Guns ‘N Roses’ Duff McKagan, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro, Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, the incomparable Taylor Hawkins (RIP) and Blink-182’s Travis Barker. What reads like a supergroup from the CD shelf of a 13-year-old around 1999 is the squad of guest musicians (deliberately not gendered) on Iggy Pop’s 19th studio album.

Supported by the comparatively youthful producer and guitarist Andrew Watt (32, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, among others), Pop and his male friends have made an album that, after the rather introspective FREE (2019), again “rocks” in an entertaining way. “Modern Day Rip Off” is preceded by a staccato piano reminiscent of “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” and in “Comments,” Iggy recounts the unsuccessful attempt to find love in the comment columns while his band plays an 80’s New concocting Wave Smiths pastiche.

The spoken word parts are quickly skipped, closing track “The Regency”, a piece of jangle pop with moshpit compatibility. The lyrics are a bit over the top at times and the production a bit too slick, but Iggy’s vocals are versatile and the songs are strong.
