Hugh Jackman asks the Academy not to nominate fellow actor Ryan Reynolds for an Oscar for Best Song in a not-so-serious Instagram video. Earlier, the Academy included the Reynolds-sung song “Good Afternoon” from the musical comedy Spirited in a list of 14 other tracks eligible for a 2023 Oscar nomination.

In the video, Jackman says he loves the movie and the song several times. However, he works a lot with Reynolds. “If Ryan Reynolds got a Best Song nomination, it would make the next year of my life unbearable,” Jackman said. “I have to spend a year with him to do ‘Wolverine and Deadpool.’ Trust me, that would be impossible.” At the end of the video, the actor addresses the Academy: “Please, please, from the bottom of my heart, don’t endorse Ryan Reynolds in that way.”

The Wolverine actor probably doesn’t mean the call seriously. He and Reynolds are good friends and even tease each other in public. Reynold volunteered. The 46-year-old replied: “I see things differently. I think the deepfakes who sang and danced for Will Ferrell and I would love to perform at the Oscars.”

Spirited opened in select US theaters in 2022 and is available on Apple TV+. The film is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol. Reynolds co-stars alongside Will Ferrell. Jackman has appeared in several musical adaptations, and in 2014 he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Les Miserables.
