Sometimes great, sometimes boring: retro cult rock from Sweden.
The Children Of The Sün (only real with umlaut) are not available for half measures. When the Swedish Kommunal collective plays a retro number like “Sugar (Shape Of A Gun),” they do so with so much conviction and cowbell that the band forgets to give the song a melody. From the old rock bar we go straight to the flower meadow: “Lilium” is a big flower child ballad, sung by Josefna Berglund Ekholm as if the aim was to outdo Stevie Nicks.
The crazy thing: It works, the song is gigantic. Like the folk song “Starfighter”, which turns into gospel in between. The Children demand “Come With Us” in another great piece that is reminiscent of the missionary mass crowd indie group The Polyphonic Spree. At this moment you want to sacrifice your last shirt to be part of this cult.
But then the group plays an intrusive slow-motion version of “Whole Lotta Love,” and you’re glad you didn’t sign anything. Strange album: half fantastic, half boring to annoying.
