The award for the best reaction to the trial singer’s departure goes to Black Country, New Road. In 2022 Isaac Wood left the group. A year later, the concert recording Live at Bush Hall appeared with eight new pieces. The message: it continues. The vocals are now divided among the three female members on Forever Howlong, the third studio album. In the best moments, the voices flow into each other after looking for themselves and finally find.
The same applies to the instruments: Black Country, play New Road like a jazz folk band. Little is composed, a lot is improvised. What works because everyone in this group dominates their instrument. Songs like “Mary” or “For the Old Country” are reminiscent of folk adventurers from Incredible String Band or Lankum.
The chamber music craziness of the pieces of Joanna Newsom has the six -minute “socks”. At “Happy Birthday”, the band shows that the postpunk noise of the early recordings is still in their bones. The wrong trip is “Nancy Tries to Take a Night”, a song that sets the many turbulence in the head of the protagonist, including a part between Breakbeat, Steve Reich and the Pogues. And then there is the title piece with a recorder arrangement for kneeling. It is the final revenge on the tormented instrument of the elementary school years: even with the hollows, art can be made.
