Finally end with overthinking, here with a flawless r’n’b-and dance album.
Off with her head – that sounds royalistic and martial. Especially since the first track on Banks’ new album is also called “Guillotine”. The artist herself would like to be understood as positive and encouraging, as a clear announcement and task: path with feelings of guilt and inferiority, away with the doubts, end with overthinking, head off for toxic relationships.
More than ten years after their celebrated debut Goddess, Banks presents itself in full splendor; Skeptically and doubtful, but with goddess -like Grandzza. This new, probably always in her slumbering power, has already been shown in the “Love is Unkind” and “I hate your ex-Girlriend”, a cooperation with the grammy-crowned doechii.
In general, Banks proves a good knack for killer collabos: the French singer Yseeult is found in the smooth “Move”, the British soulstar and producer Sampha can be heard at “Make It Up”. Banks’ not fundamentally new, but updated sound is significantly darker, deeper, sowing more than usual. Still tender and slightly washed out on the edges, overall adult and with confident sexyness. For Off With Her Head, Banks invited the same musicians: inside and producer with whom she once recorded Goddess. Obviously, everyone involved was clear about what it was about.
