Reus turns to BVB fans: “Was too broken to get into your arms”

After missed title

BVB captain Marco Reus thanked the fans after just missing out on the championship and described his emotional world. “I was speechless and totally lost at first. I know you called me to you – but I was too broken at that moment to come into your arms,” wrote the 33-year-old from Dortmund on Instagram. It hurts because BVB hasn’t been that close for so long – but: “Anyone who knows me, this club and you BVB fans knows that we will get up again, continue to work and fight – just like it this great club has always done!”

With a 2-2 draw against FSV Mainz 05, Dortmund lost their chance of winning their first championship in eleven years. Reus came off the bench in the 40th minute for the injured Karim Adeyemi when the score was 0-2. For the offensive player, who was signed by Borussia Mönchengladbach for 17 million euros in 2012, it would have been the first championship title of his career – and the culmination of his long career, which was marked by setbacks. Since that top transfer, the Bundesliga has only known one champion: FC Bayern.

Reus wrote that it is currently difficult for him to put his thoughts, feelings and emotions into words. But it is still important for him to say thank you to the fans. What the BVB family did for the team on Saturday, the euphoria, the atmosphere around the stadium, the good wishes that were received and felt from all over Germany were unique. And it shows how special this club and its fans are.

The captain, who came off the bench after the 4-2 defeat in Munich, extended his contract, which ran until 2023, by another year. His gross salary was reportedly adjusted from EUR 12 million to a maximum of EUR 7 million – veteran Mats Hummels (34) also last signed until 2024.
