Returnee Polter convinced of staying up

Sebastian Polter celebrated his comeback at FC Schalke 04 on the last weekend of the Bundesliga – after a four-month break due to a cruciate ligament injury. In the hot phase of the season, the striker wants to help to achieve the win of the season with the royal blue.

In the 2-1 home win against Werder Bremen, Polter returned to Schalke’s Bundesliga team for the first time in 2023 and came on for Simon Terodde in the 74th minute.

After the important trio at home, the Gelsenkircheners are finally aiming for a win again away from home. “We have to focus on what our strengths are, like we did in the home games. This willpower, wanting to win every single duel. But also these runs in depth and on the defensive, throwing ourselves in for each other. […] It’s important for us that we want to collect points, including away points,” said Polter on Tuesday on the “Sky” microphone.

So far, Schalke have only won one of 14 away games, but still have to play three times in foreign stadiums in the last four match days. Comebacker Polter also knows that it is all the more important that there are performance increases in Mainz, Munich and Leipzig.

The S04 striker also assumes that the exciting relegation battle this year will only be decided on the last day of the game: “Everyone tries to climb up somewhere and collect points. So do we, of course. We try to stay clear and collect our points to be above the line at the end of the day.”

Polter warned not to look too closely at the competition in the relegation battle. Schalke have not had a direct basement duel in the last four matchdays, so the focus is exclusively on their own performance.

“Ultimately we can’t influence whether the others score or not. The most important thing is that we look at ourselves and collect points so that we can achieve our goals at the end of the season,” said the 32-year-old, who has made 15 Bundesliga appearances so far. Played games for FC Schalke and scored a goal.
