Return of tennis player Wawrinka after two operations in a year

Tennis player Stan Wawrinka makes his comeback after more than a year of absence. The 36-year-old Swiss will participate next week with a wild card in the challenger tournament in Marbella, the Andalusia Open. Wawrinka underwent two surgeries last year due to a foot injury.

The three-time grand slam winner last played on the ATP Tour in March last year. Wawrinka was then eliminated in the first round in both Rotterdam and Doha. The Swiss was already suffering from his left foot at that time and eventually had surgery. A few months later, another operation was required. The former number 3 in the world has dropped to 232nd place in the world ranking due to his physical problems.

Wawrinka has won sixteen ATP titles, including three Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open in 2014, Roland Garros in 2015 and the US Open a year later. The Swiss won Olympic gold in the doubles at the 2008 Beijing Games with compatriot Roger Federer.
