They dangle happily back and forth in the wind; More than a hundred umbrellas in bright orange colors hang throughout the street. “It came on like pooping,” says initiator and catering entrepreneur Zep van der Werf. “I texted my colleague in Deventer and Spain and they are there too. We are not unique, but we are the first in Alkmaar.”

Hope the World Cup comes to life

“Something is finally happening,” says entrepreneur of a clothing store in the street Steven Arts, laughing from under an orange umbrella. “In the winter we always have the light bulbs hanging, but in the summer the cables are actually always bare. So we thought the World Cup is coming…”

The only question is whether this orange street the Dutch national team will help to win the coveted cup.

Steven Arts. “No, but it does help with the atmosphere.” Café owner Zep van der Werf laughs: “Do you want a tactical or honest answer? I’m just looking forward to it. We broadcast the matches and I just hope that the World Cup will come to life in the street.”
