Results almost everywhere, delay in Hoorn due to ‘huge ballots’

The BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) is the largest party in many municipalities. The result is now known almost everywhere, but in Hoorn and Purmerend it will not be counted again until tomorrow. Counting was so long that volunteers had to work late into the night. “The problem was mainly that the ballot papers were huge,” explains a spokesman for the municipality of Hoorn.

A big election win for BBB: the preliminary results show that that party received by far the most votes. This means a major blow to the coalition parties VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie. Votes are still being counted in two municipalities.

A high turnout and complicated large ballots would be the main reasons for the delay. “We had enough volunteers, but some went home earlier,” says a spokesman for the municipality of Hoorn.

At a number of polling stations, the counting took place enormously because of the size of the ballot paper. “It was almost like a newspaper, so filling it out also took more time.”

Overtired

In addition to Hoorn, Purmerend has not yet finished counting. “Last night the counting of the votes stopped because the counters became overtired,” a spokesperson told NH News this afternoon.

The municipality does announce that according to the provisional results, BBB is also the winner for both elections in Purmerend. “Since it is important that this is done carefully, we continued with the count this morning. The results have therefore been delayed.”

BBB bastion

In the municipalities where all results are known, it appears that a striking number of North Hollanders voted for BBB. In wealthy Bergen, the party received more than 16 percent of the vote, the normally popular VVD is now in second place with more than 15 percent.

BBB is also doing well in Alkmaar. There, 15 percent of the vote went to that party. The municipality of Hollands-Kroon is at the top: more than 38 percent of the voters there chose Caroline van der Plas.

In Amsterdam and Haarlem, the left-wing parties GroenLinks and PvdA are the largest. Only in the south of the province, as in the region ‘T Throw, the voters convincingly choose VVD.

FvD big loser

The big loser of this election is FvD. Of the eight seats in 2019, only one remains. The parties CDA and SP are also making significant sacrifices.

Although the turnout has not been this high in more than thirty years, the turnout in North Holland was slightly lower this year (50.3%) than in 2019 (56.6%).
