Residents dislike blinded fence for a view during F1: ‘Viewing pleasure from the track’

The Zandvoort Engeline and Henk van Koningsbruggen were looking forward to a weekend of viewing pleasure. From their house they have a perfect view of the platform where the train enters Zandvoort. But hours of watching visitors, who walk like an orange sea towards the circuit, is not possible this weekend. The view from their apartment complex is blocked by fences with a black sail in front.

The fences are about 1.80 meters high. “Viewing pleasure is thus gone”, Engeline sighs. She and her neighbors have already made several attempts to have the sails removed, but to no avail. The fences will remain in place for the view during the race weekend.

“We think the Grand Prix is fantastic and that fences are being placed is of course fine,” says Engeline. “But not with such a black tarp. Then we’ll be looking at a blank wall all weekend.”

No distraction

But the fences are covered with sails for a reason, says a spokesperson for the Dutch Grand Prix. “If a lot of people have to walk on the same stretch, it is important for safety that they do so in a focused way.” The sails are on the fences so that visitors do not look to the side and as a result, for example, stumble.

“I understand that it is very annoying for the residents, but experience tells us that this works best if people keep the focus forward and do not get distracted while walking,” said the spokesperson.

For Engeline and Henk it is extra bad, because they have only been living in this place for six weeks. “We were so looking forward to this whole thing.”
