Residents after shooting: ‘I thought this was a neat neighborhood’

A bullet impact in a white van is the silent witness of a shooting on Sunday evening in a courtyard on the Diamantdijk in Roosendaal. According to residents of the Diamantdijk, seven shots were fired. A corner house was accidentally hit and a 27-year-old man was seriously injured. “You’re not surprised by anything these days.”

The residents of a corner house are still very frightened. While the couple watched TV on the couch on Sunday evening, a bullet went straight through the window. They were so shocked that they dared not move. “We stayed as low as possible on the couch,” says the woman. She wants to forget as soon as possible.

‘Quiet neighbourhood’
Joop van der Velden and his wife Marianne took care of the couple after the bullet hit. “Their house was checked by the police, so they came to us. A lot of coffee was made.” According to Joop, they have nothing to do with the shooting. He says it’s a quiet neighborhood where you don’t expect something like that.

When Joop heard explosions on Sunday evening, he first thought it was fireworks. Looking out the skylight in the attic, he saw two people running away: “They fled to a car that was waiting.” According to Joop, traces of blood from the injured man could be seen in a corridor behind the house.

‘Something with drugs’
Police have not yet said what led to the shooting. She has not yet been able to speak to the 27-year-old man who is seriously injured in the hospital.

Police spokesman Willem Jan Uytdehage finds it striking that criminals confront each other in broad daylight and shoot in a residential area. In the past, he says, this usually happened somewhere afterwards on a business park or in a warehouse.

Most people in the neighborhood say the shooting must have something to do with drugs. But the police can’t confirm that. Not everyone is used to the recent violence yet. “I always thought that we live in a decent neighborhood, but that turns out to be disappointing,” says a resident.
